Bleeding from enlarged veins (varices) in the digestive tract. This is called variceal bleeding. Variceal bleeding, especially in the esophagus and stomach, is a major cause of illness and death in people who have cirrhosis.
Roger has had 4 banding of the veins in the last 5 years. When the liver isn’t functioning properly, the blood backs up in the veins. If the veins burst, this creates the bleeding. If the veins are not banded at least once a year, the bleeding could occur without notice.
